Students and Parents-Know Before You Go
Should I Attend?
If you are thinking about enrolling in college for the 2022-2023 academic year and you need help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) then, yes you should attend. If you are not 100% sure where you are going to enroll you should still complete the FAFSA.
If you are a high school senior your high school may be offering a College Goal FAF$A event on your campus. Check our Events page, if you don't see your high school listed check with your counselor.
If your high school is not having an event, check out the nearest FAFSA Completion event in your community.
Do I Need to Pre-Register for a College Goal FAF$A Event?
You can attend any community event of your choice. If you are a senior at a high school having an event, see your counselor to find out if pre-registration is required. Pre-registration for a community event is not needed. You simply attend.
What Do I Need to Bring?
To complete the 2022-2023 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will need:
- Your Social Security Number
- Parents' Social Security Number, if the student is a Dependent.
- Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- Your 2020 federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your 2020 federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
- Your 2020 records of untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans non education benefits.
- Current information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate not including the home in which you live; and business and farm assets.
- An FSA ID to sign electronically. (If you do not already have one, visit https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing to obtain one.) For additional information on the new FSA ID visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/fsaid.
- If you are a dependent student, then you will also need most of the above information for your parent(s).
- If for some reason your 2020 taxes are not done before you fill out your 2022-2023 FAFSA, you can use estimated amounts. Prior year taxes or end of year paystub may be used to estimate these amounts. Be sure to update your FAFSA with your 2020 actual income and tax information once your taxes have been filed.
I don't have my 2020 tax information at this time. Can I still complete the FAFSA?
Yes, you can use your W-2, or your last paycheck stub from December 2020 to estimate your tax information on the FAFSA. Be sure to update your FAFSA online with actual income and tax information once your taxes have been filed.
